Railay Beach is a small peninsula that comprises of four beaches. The peninsula is located between Krabi and Ao Nang. Railay Beach is a place that you must visit if you are in Krabi. However, note that the only way to get there is by boat, and so you should know your options beforehand. For your information, here are some available options for you to get from Krabi to Railay Beach:
A preferred option is to take a longtail boat. From the town center or downtown Krabi, it will take you less than ten minutes to get to the pier. When you get there, you can expect to wait for other passengers to board, and the boat will most likely wait until it’s full before leaving. After you get to the pier, you will have to buy a one-way ticket for 200 Baht, or around $6. It takes around 25 to 30 minutes to reach Railay East. From there, you can walk by foot to Railay West, which is where the main beach is, and it will only take you 2 to 3 minutes.
Most tourists prefer traveling to Railay Beach via a travel agent. Although it is the most convenient option, it comes with a higher price tag as well. There are several agents in the riverside in Krabi town. Your travel agent will be able to arrange transport for you to get to Railay Beach. You will be picked up from your accommodation to Klong Jilad Pier, Krabi’s main pier. From there, you can then take a boat to Railay Beach. A one-way ticket will cost you 250 Baht, or around $7.80.
Songthaews are a popular passenger vehicle in Thailand that operates as a bus. You can take a songthaew on your route to the Klong Jilan Pier. They usually come every twenty minutes. It is worth mentioning that it can be quite difficult to find a songthaew that is empty enough to fit you and your luggage.
If comfort is your priority and you can afford to spend the extra cash, then you can get a private boat for around 900 to 1,200 Baht ($27 to $36). This is an ideal choice for those who travel with a group. Other than the Klong Jilan Pier, another available pier is the Ao Nammao Pier. You can take a songthaew with a fare of around 60 Baht ($2) to get to the pier. The boat fare is only 80 Baht ($2.5) from the Ao Nammao Pier to Railay Beach.
Note that the last boat from Railay East to Klong Jilad Pier and Ao Nammao Pier leaves at 5 pm. This means that you have to manage your time very well so that you won’t miss the last boat. Otherwise, you will be stuck in Railay Beach overnight. Although there are accommodations there, you would not want to spend extra on a hotel room. Besides, you will want to get back to Krabi for the nightlife!
